The Congregation of the Sisters of the Imitation of Christ (Known as Bethany Sisters) was founded by Servant of God Mar Ivanios in 1925 in the Jacobite Church. In 1930 all the ten members of the congregation, together with the founder, re-united with the Catholic Church. Bethany is a congregation of Contemplatives in action.
The congregation received Potificial status in 1956. Now there are five Provinces (Trivandrum, Thiruvalla, Bathery, Pathanamthitta and Muvattupuzha) under one Mother General. There are some 800 sisters, 13 novices and about 50 candidates in the congregation.The spiritual renovation of the Malankara Church, Re-union, Evangelization and upliftment of women through imitation of Christ is the charism of the congregation
His grace Metropolitan Archbishop Mar Ivanios (Fr. P.T Geevarghese Panickaruveettil) is the founder of the congregation of the Sisters of The Imitation of Christ (SIC).Prompted by divine inspiration to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ throughout India through the spiritual renewal of the Malankara Church and of the families, Mar Ivanios founded this religious communities at Thirumoolapuram, Thiruvalla on 21st September 1925
Archbishop Mar Ivanios made a global influence through his ascetic life and endevours for the communion of Churches through the Re-union Movement which was essentially ecumenical in nature. He was a great force in the society through his pioneering efforts in the fields of education and dedication to the cause of the poor. The name of our congregation is Sisters of the Imitation of Christ. Our sisters are known as Bethany sisters and our houses are known as Bethany Madhoms (Bethany convents). The Bethany Madhom is a family modeled after Bethany in the Gospel; the house of Mary, Martha and Lazarus. It embodies the spirit of Bethany as a house of consolation and as a house of response wherein the members lead a simple life of prayer, action and evengelization
The Bethany Sisters are called to live a life of prayer filled with the love of God as Mary, a life of service filled with the love of God as Martha and life of servent testimony to resurrection as Lazarus. These obligations are to be fulfilled by loving and imitating Jesus firmly.
